Advice from a “happy spitter” parent, December 29, 2014

My LO has reflux. Has had it since birth but was more evident at 2-3 weeks when, due to BM supply issues and LO not gaining weight,we had to supplement with formula (initially started with Similac Sensitive). He had what I would call “eruptile” vomiting where the milk would flow freely from his nose and mouth with nary a warning and would also occasionally cough and choke during feeds. He was never super fussy and/or colicky and rarely cries. We burped frequently throughout feeding, used slow flow nipples, used gas drops, kept upright for 30-40 minutes after feeding and nothing helped. His average was to soak through 2 bibs and at least 1 diaper cloth during and after each feed. Initially we thought formula sensitivity??? So we experimented with these formulas, none of which decreased the amount of vomiting:
    Similac Breastfeeding: diarrhea
    Enfamil Prosobee: constipation
    Similac Soy: constipation
    Similac Alimentum: increased vomiting
Gerber Soothe: (I really wanted this one to work) LO would refuse to eat
FYI: save yourself some trouble and $$, if your baby is NOT having colicky symptoms with the reflux, then they prob do not have a formula sensitivity (per my pediatrician).
Just when I started to feel the hopelessness that most GERD parents feel, I found a recommendation for this formula online. This is the same formula as Similac Sensitive (lactose free) with rice starch already added. After the first feeding, it was evident that this really works for reflux. He actually burps without vomiting and will keep 90% of each feeding down. He still spits up a bit after each feed but consider this to be a “normal” amount. Having dealt with constipation issues before and therefore wanting to avoid it with this “magic” formula, I also use Gerber Soothe drops daily and my LO will have a nice poop at least once a day. We use avent bottles and have had no issues with flow using this formula and the #2 nipple. We have had no issues with clumps in this formula either. As I am still breastfeeding, I will mix this formula (by shaking in a closed bottle) and let sit while breastfeeding or bottlefeeding my pumped breastmilk. The bubbles/froth will dissipate the longer you let it sit. I will eventually need to mix larger quantities of this formula and will then probably upgrade to a mixing pitcher or shaker and refrigerate, which is what most parents using this formula do.

If you are frustrated with the amount of spit up/vomiting that your LO is producing or you suspect reflux, give this formula a try.

I was recommended to use this formula by my sons pediatrician to supplement his breastmilk. I find that it has helped a lot with his spit-ups and his fussiness, much more so then the Gerber he was on before. The formula does clump up a lot though, which it is supposed to to help keep it in the babies tummy. I normally will make a large batch in a separate container and then fill my bottles up, this seems to cut down on the clumps and bubbles.

Godsend For Preemie Reflux Baby, October 19, 2016

This was a godsend for 33 weeker who suffered horrible bouts of acid reflux. We worked long and hard with lactation but knew after consulting several specialists, we needed to add formula. He was way to young and at under 6 pounds upon arriving home, had a very open gut. Adding cereal to an already choking baby is always a bad idea. I’m so grateful our pediatrician and NICU followup team finally all agreed on one thing – Similac SpitUp was the best formula for our little. It comes with the weight needed and no choking problems. It’s thicker than normal but easily flows through a Avent L1 slow flow.

The price is hard to stomach, there’s no generic but buying here at Amazon subscribe and save is a great option. Formula will appear bubbly and leave residue along bottles, that’s okay. I’ve found best to shake, stir and serve immediately. This formula does not due well left out over time. I do not save these after 20 minutes if not fed, because the consistency is off. Although many brands pre-made well, I again do not recommend with this formula. Treat as a medicine, disperse and use as needed than trash.
